About John D. Wiseman

I first became a volunteer fireman when for the first time I lived in a town in N.J. that had a volunteer fire department. When I retired I moved back to my home town of Mufreeesboro, TN, and I joined a Rutherford County volunteer department that was beginning to go into operation. I attended the TN State Fire School in Murfreesboro, where I completed all but two of the courses offered there. I am no longer an active volunteer because of a physical disability. After 40 years of volunteer service, I suppose that is long enough.

I still answer fire calls, but all that I do is take videos for training purposes. I am still active in training volunteer departments.

When I visited the Fire Service Institute at Iowa State University in 1991, the Director, George Oster, suggested that a book needed to be written about the research done there by Keith Royer and Bill Nelson. I wrote a book, The Iowa State Story, for the 75th anniversay of the Fire Service Institute. I do believe that these two men were the first to learn how to use fog nozzles efficiently and effectively.

I am co-author of a second book with Dr. John Bertrand entitled, The Safe and Effective use of Fog Nozzles. All my university training, B.A. and M.A., taught me how to write expository articles. I used this knowledge, plus a lot of research to write this book. I think that this book is an up-to-date presentation that proves that fog nozzles are by far the most efficient and efffective nozzles to use on confined structure fires. This book is now published by Lightning Source, LaVergne, TN, at a very reasonable price.

Description: Finally, a book that describes the research, both historical and recent, which leads to the proper use of fog nozzles. The Safe and Effective Use of Fog Nozzles: Research and Practice suggests the most appropriate types of fires, situations, tactics, and strategies that lead to the greater and better utilization of this often misused tool. Authors John E. Bertrand and John D. Wiseman examine a number of myths connected with firefighting that have contributed to tactics and tools that may produce greater risk to the firefighter and less efficient knock down.

The Iowa State Story

Preface: In 1994, I visited the Fire Service Institute at Iowa State University and met with George Oster who was the Executive Director of the Fire Service Institute. Mr. Oster suggested to me that there was a need to tell the story of the research done at the Fire Service Institute by Bill Nelson and Keith Royer. I was interested because one purpose of my visit was to find out more about the contributions of these two men. George Oster arranged for me to go to the Archives at the Iowa State University Library to research 42 boxes of material that had been left there by Keith Royer upon his retirement in 1988. The content of the boxes had not been looked at since that time. The material in these boxes provided the information that I needed to tell the Iowa State Story.
